Welcome to the Rural Womens Movement
The RWM was initiated in 1998 and was formally launched in a workshop for 250 rural women in November 2000, at the Coastlands Hotel in Durban – South Africa.
RWM is registered with the Department of Social Development in terms of the
Non-Profit Act, 1997 (Act 71 of 1997) as an independent Non-Profit Making Organization. RWM is based in the province of KwaZulu Natal – South Africa.
RWM is made up of poor landless rural women whose communities were forcibly evicted from their ancestral land by the apartheid system. The movement has attracted a membership of more than 40 000 (500 rural women’s Community Based Organizations). 95% of the RWM membership is doing unpaid work within their households and in their respective communities.
